Dorper Sheep

Meadowood Farms is home to a flock of Dorper sheep, a hardy and efficient breed developed in South Africa by crossing the Dorset Horn with the Blackhead Persian sheep. Originally bred through the efforts of the South African Department of Agriculture, Dorpers were designed to thrive in arid, challenging environments while producing high-quality meat. Their exceptional adaptability, rapid growth, and low-maintenance nature have since made them one of the most popular meat sheep breeds worldwide.

Known for their calm disposition and excellent maternal instincts, Dorper sheep are natural foragers that perform exceptionally well in pasture-based farming systems. Unlike many traditional wool breeds, Dorpers naturally shed their coats, eliminating the need for shearing and making them especially well-suited to sustainable, low-input farming practices. Their ability to efficiently convert grass and forage into lean, flavorful lamb makes them an ideal choice for farms committed to producing premium-quality meat.
